Update - A New Herd

A fair sized update this weeknd, though i'm not sure how many new entries. I suppose i could go down to the next paragraph and count, but i'm feeling much too lazy. Let's just call it three score, or thereabouts.

And, no - that's not a typo. There really is a strip called Buttie And Boobie. (And it came from a guy named Hammer in a title that starts with Frisky) But, it's not what you might be thinking.

The 1940s Funny Animalphabet now has 500 entries listed. Not all have the data assigned as yet, but the majority do and gaps are rapidly being filled. (If the fields are blank, it hasn't been processed, if there's question marks, the information is unknown, Exception - Other Appearances is left blank if none are known)

Some information will be slower to fill in than others. For example, the most recent stumbling block was Tabby. I prepped the image for Tabby's entry when doing the original blog posts for The Voice Of ODD!. At that time, the sources weren't very relevant so i wasn't meticulous in my notes. Going back to fill in the data, i couldn't find any reference to the character or strip in any comics database, despite hours of searching. (Much time can be spent searching for possible typos that could be hiding the information.) Finally, i came to realize that the comic from which it was sourced, Nutty Comics #3, remains un-indexed in the databases. (So, yeah - i'm compiling a complete issue index to submit.) It was only randomly flipping through old issues that finally found the source.
Hopefully, we'll eventually get it all.

And, yes - please do feel free to volunteer information not currently present, or suggest corrections where appropriate.

As noted to the right, this all started as a carried-away blog post after noticing how amazingly many Funny Animal characters were running around in comics back in the '40s. Even with 500 entries, we're nowhere near complete at this stage. We haven't even started to list the Big Names, like the Disney, Warner, and MGM critters, for example. Folks know them anyway, so they need listing the least. We'll get to them eventually.

Now that we've reached the 500 mark, it's time to go ahead and open up the doors, so we'll stop hiding from the search engines and Blogger. To celebrate, here's a lovely little poster of Cosmo Cat i found, signed by both Ellis Holly Chambers and Leonard Brandt Cole, both of whose work you can find throughout the Funny Animalphabet.

The Navigation Menu is always at the top of the column to right, but here's one you may use now to get you started. Jump straight to the introduction or to any letter to view the listings. There's also a simple text list of entries on the Index page, as well as a text listing of applicable entries at the top of each letter's page. Hopefully that'll make browsing easier for you.

No Error 404 - Files Found

What's with the weird subject line?

I did a count on how many entries we have in the Funny Animalphabet currently. There are 404 - no error - counted twice. And we still haven't gotten to the big names of the era. Not a single Disney listing yet, nor the Warner Brothers crew, Tom & Jerry, Mighty Mouse, Felix The Cat, and so many more. That will start to change soon. I know there are a bunch of Terry-Toons Comics in the next sort pile, so Mighty Mouse will show up soon, at the very least. There are also a batch of characters who have appeared previously on The Voice Of ODD! whom we've yet to see added, like Earl The Rich Rabbit and Lockjaw The Alligator. I really should try to at least include those characters we've already seen, eh?

Other progress - Information has been entered or expanded for scores of entries, and some have had secondary graphics added. I don't think it will be long before a majority of entries have basic data listed. (Where known)

Possible site additions currently being contemplated:

Artist Identification Guide - a collection of signatures & marks, and to whom they belong.
Creator Profile/Index Blog Posts - I'm contemplating using 'ongoing' blog posts to spotlight individual creators. What i mean by that is that the post would be open to updating over time, adding more information and artwork instead of being a static blog post. This would allow each post to be a separate but linked datapoint, making it easy to search or browse.
Character Profile/Index Blog Posts - Same as above, but featuring specific characters (and including some of their comic tales? Should comic stories be posted individually for easy indexing/searching?)
Cover Galleries - Each featuring a particular title, character, or artist.

If things keep the current pace, the next status update should be the general opening of the site.

Fun With Zoophilia

It's obviously half-assed and still under development, but - what the frell... Let's open the doors and let some light in here while i'm working.

At opening, most everything from the original 1940s Funny Animalphabet posts on The Voice Of ODD! has been transferred to the new format. What wasn't transferred was removed due to duplication or error. (A few characters did not actually appear until 1950)
Work has begun on listing details for each entry, but many are still just name and image with a blank information template. This is not being done systematically, rather by random impulse. This means that data complete entries are scattered throughout the listing rather than all being clustered at the beginning.

Additionally, many new entries have been added to the listing - about 100, bringing the total up to somewhere between 350-400, so far. (Though we still have yet to begin adding the "big boys" that were left out of the original census) I'm not counting as i go, but you can do a quick perusal via the Index - a simple text listing of Animalphabet entries. As work progresses, i'll indicate new listings in batch progress notices on the blog.

Eventually, i'd like to add a Creator Index, listing where you can find your favorite artist or writer. I suppose i should be working with some clever database software to build the site, but this is what happens when a blog post goes wild.

Some other possibilities:
Should we mirror old (and new) posts from The Voice Of ODD! which feature '40s Funny Animals?
Should we focus on creators? (if so, the above applies those posts as well)
Cover Galleries for characters?
